MLMUG LISTSERVE

MLMUG has an e-mail list server <list@mlmug.org> for circulating messages, meeting updates, special offers, items for sale, technical questions, hot news, etc.

List delivery is available in "immediate" delivery mode, for up-to-the-minute messages, or in "digest" mode, a collection of the day's communications delivered daily at 7 PM to your e-mail address.

MLMUG member email addresses are not to be rented, sold, farmed, collected, or otherwise used for the purpose of unsolicited advertisements.

Our List now has an official archive.

MLMUG LISTSERVE POLICY STATEMENT

MLMUG Listserve subscriptions are reserved for MLMUG members currently in good standing only.

Correspondence is monitored to protect MLMUG's membership and to ensure proper use of the listserve.

Be considerate of MLMUG's audience. Your message must be appropriate for this Listserve. On topic messages on this listserve include messages related to meeting updates, special, items for sale, technical questions, and Mac industry related news.

Occasional off-topic posts, used sparingly and clearly identified with "off topic" in the subject field are permitted.

When posting humor, the word "humor" must appear in the subject line.

Please practice good net etiquette (netiquette). (See "Basic Netiquette below.)"

MLMUG's Listserve is not a forum for arguments or off-topic discussions. Take arguments and personal discussion to private exchange.

Never set up your account to autorespond to the List.

Never send a message to the List by clicking on a website's "Send this article to a friend," or "E-mail this story," or similar link.

If your post contains a link for which access requires a subscription, warn the reader of that.

Do not reply to digest messages with "List #123" in the subject line. Modify the subject line to reflect the content of your message.

Do not reply to the digest with the entire digest quoted. Quote only the relevant text necessary to make your point. Repeat violators may be switched to Immediate Mode, at the discretion of the List Monitors.

Do not quote the entire message on any response. Edit out the prolog & epilog and quote only the pertinent parts.

Do not post attachments. If your message is too large for a simple text e-mail, offer it to members as a private mailing or via ftp link.

Please do not post html code. Only plain text messages should be posted.

Flaming, spamming and other inconsiderate behavior will not be tolerated.

Sign your name at the end of your message. Few will know your identity if you sign only a clever login name, e.g. crustydude@home.com.

You may post only Apple/Mac related items for sale (as permitted by law) to the listserve, but further solicitation of members on the listserve is forbidden unless approved by the Monitor or MLMUG Board of Directors.

Use of the list for illegal activities, including software piracy, is strictly prohibited. Posts must comply with copyright laws. Posting of material that may be considered racist, hateful, pornographic, etc., is forbidden.

Send all administrative inquiries/requests (i.e. subscription status, delivery issues, etc.) to the webmaster at webmaster@mlmug.org.

DO NOT post subscription change requests, etc. to the list.

If you have questions regarding the Listserve and/or the proper use of the MLMUG Listserve, please contact <webmaster@mlmug.org>. Issues not addressed here will be taken under consideration by the MLMUG Board of Directors.

The list monitors have the authority of the MLMUG Board of Directors to use their judgement in deciding if and when a post violates the MLMUG's Listserve Policy and what remedy is appropriate. Repeated failure to comply with the MLMUG's Listserve Policy may result in the temporary or permanent revocation of a member's list participation privileges.

A member of MLMUG can appeal to the MLMUG Board if they disagree with a decision of a list monitor.

Reasons to be privately reprimanded or temporarily unsubscribed:

  1. Including the full digest version in replies
  2. Offensive or inappropriate language
  3. Too many off topic posts
  4. Illegal activity
  5. Not complying with these list rules or with the monitor's requests
  6. Spaming or Flaming
  7. Lengthy signature

By subscribing to the Listserve you are confirming that you have read and agree to the terms of MLMUG's Listserve Policy.

Basic Netiquette

Please practice good net etiquette (netiquette).

MLMUG's listserve policy is not the final word on Cyberspace Etiquette. In addition to the following, we suggest reading: <http://www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html>
and
<http://www.emailreplies.com>.

• Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

• Personal conversations or exchanges are for private e-mails.

• People have varying opinions and tolerance must be practiced by all.

• Be patient with newcomers. They may lack knowledge or ability in regard to the internet.

• Remember, not all participants are native speakers of English.

• Be forgiving of unintentional misunderstandings or discourtesies.

• Carefully read all messages to be sure you fully understand them.

• Re-read what you are about to send. Be sure your message cannot be easily misconstrued.

• When using humor or sarcasm, be sure it's evident. The absence of expressions common in face-to-face communication can lead to potential misunderstandings.
Use smiley faces, i.e., :-), to help indicate your message is meant as humor or sarcasm.

• Don't hide behind the anonymity of the internet to say rude or insulting things that you wouldn't say in person.

• Don't forward private messages to the list without permission.

• Use concise subject lines that clearly define the contents of the message.

• Second subjects within a message are often overlooked. Consider writing a message on a new topic rather than including it in the first message.

• If significant time has elapsed between the original message and your reply, your recipient may not understand a reply that only says, "Yes" or "Friday morning." Quote whatever portions of the original message that will make your reply sensible.

• Avoid using all UPPERCASE characters in your message. They are less readable and considered the e-mail equivalent of shouting.

• Avoid cluttering your messages with excessive emphasis (such as stars, arrows, etc.) that make the message hard to follow.

To subscribe or unsubscribe from the MLMUG Listserve:

E-mail <webmaster@mlmug.org> and indicate whether you prefer immediate or digest delivery. You must be a current, paid-in-full member to be on the listserve. Do not attempt to subscribe if you are not an MLMUG member in good standing.

To change your email address, send the webmaster your:

  • Old email address
  • New email address
  • Desired Mode - Immediate or Digest

SECURITY:

NOTE: For security reasons, The MLMUG list is monitored so that only members have access to the list. You must subscribe to the e-mail address you wish to post from. If you wish to post from multiple e-mail addresses, indicate to which address you wish to receive listserve messages. If you wish to receive listserve messages at multiple addresses, indicate which address(es) are to be immediate delivery and which are to be digest.

To post to the list:

Merely compose your letter and send it to <list@mlmug.org> and your message will automatically be sent to everyone on the listserve mailing list.

See you on the list!
